Okay so we know porn is highly consumed. Lots of us watch it, we're like that. But have we ever gotten over the initial rush of partaking in a taboo to think about how/where, and under what circumstances it was made? Maybe even go so far as to realize that although porn is produced to fulfill fantasies, the actors who star in porn often lead lives that are less than fantastic?
No, this little post is not an attempt to dissuade viewers or preach about the unethical treatment of men and women in porn. I've just come to realize that there definitely is good porn and bad porn, and there is the possibility that through being aware of this fact we can make some small social change. Kind of like knowing the social/environmental differences between shopping at Wal-Mart and shopping at your local market.
BAD PORN. I have some initial thoughts that won't even scratch the surface, but I should start somewhere. The first two are easy but worth mentioning, and regard the largest grossing films ever made, yet the stars made how much?!?! Debbie Does Dallas and Deep Throat. The star of Debbie Does Dallas, Bambi Woods, was apparently paid $400 for a film that has since made millions, her whereabouts is currently unknown. The star of Deep Throat, Linda Lovelace, was paid $1200 for a film that has grossed $100-$600 million dollars, and was forced by her abusive husband, Chuck Traynor to do it. Not only did the stars NOT get rich, their stories reek of the typical "guys who fuck are heroes, girls who fuck are dirty sluts".
BAD PORN. The Southeast Asian kind. This is where porn gets particularly gritty, Cambodia. Girls as young as 6 years old are being found tortured, raped, and held captive in chicken coops during brothel raids. A google search for the phrase "cambodia porn man charged" reveals 91,000 hits on the subject of men worldwide being charged with sex crimes against children stemming from Cambodia. Stay away from Southeast Asian adult entertainment, even if you think that consenting adults are involved in the production of it. Digging into stories of the region's sex trade will break your heart and make you ashamed that a) you have any sexual desires what so ever and b) are a part of the same race that breeds monsters who get off on fucking little kids.

GOOD PORN. Phew, found some. No Fauxxx exclaims "Hot radical porn made by ladies, queers, and artists from all over the world. Gradually we move to our current time and the control of the world affairs by those with money and power. In failing to find the words to explain this entirely at this point, I suggest watching this to start you off.
The new Smashing Pumpkins record is also called Zeitgeist as well, maybe a similar story arc is buried in Corgan's fuzzed out guitar riffs?

At a local level, the ultra-right Mormon off-shoot community called Bountiful, BC is receiving some national attention again. It's a little town where men have many wives, marrying girls when they are as young as 13 years old. Almost none of them finish high-school. Although polygamy is illegal in Canada, the leaders of Bountiful claim that they have the right to marry as many teenagers as they like and that the Constitution protects this, their "Religious Rights". It's abhorrent and disgusting that anyone would claim they have the right to abuse children via religion, and it doesn't stop there. If Canadians fail to prosecute the leaders of Bountiful, a new precedent will be set. The floodgates will open for religious groups to practice abuse, mutilation, and killing in the name of God and protected by law. Fuck Canada, stop being so fucking apathetic and polite and start protecting HUMAN RIGHTS not religious rights. Read a lot more here.
