BURMESE "MEN"
29 May 2007

I haven't really heard much of the group Burmese before, except I did listen to a few tracks when I was visiting the Load Records site a year or so back. Sort of very aggressive power noise - Load Records style - consisting of two bass players and a drummer. That was then.

Last week I was in a record store and saw the cover of this record in the sales bin. I think what may have intrigued me initially was the cover, which shows to be a clean cut looking guy, close up, with tears trailing out of his eyes. The record is called "Men".

Even with just the cover art and track listing alone, you get Burmese's statement of white male insecurity and power in the Western world, including such track names as "Preyer", "Thumbsucker" and "Shut Your Mouth... I Paid For The Hour". It made me uncomfortable as it's definitely direct and brutal, but at the same time it makes one think about the psychological villianry and damage that a lot male attitudes towards themselves, women, and people they consider "lesser citizens" do in the world around them. If I come across some similar other covers that have direct communication I will be sure to post them.
